Jessica Lutz, a barista in a D.C. coffee shop who plays hockey in an Arlington men’s league, scored the go-ahead goal in the third period in Switzerland’s 4-3 win over Sweden in the women’s hockey bronze medal game at the Sochi 2014 Games.
“I’m so proud,” said Lutz, who works at The Coffee Bar at S Street NW, near 14th Street, “I am going to wear the bronze medal when I get back to work.”
Lutz, a Rockville native who has dual citizenship because her father was born in Switzerland, scored at 13:53 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie. The Swiss team trailed 2-0 entering the period, but scored four unanswered goals to take command late in the game. When it was over, their players put on a gold-medal-worthy celebration, tossing their equipment in the air, storming the ice and make pseudo-snow angels on the ice.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said Lutz, who scored one other goal in the tournament. “It was probably the craziest game I’ve ever played in … It was a great pass [that set up] my goal. I couldn’t control my excitement but the coach was telling us to stay calm and concentrate. I still can’t believe what happened.”
