Patrick Deneen came to Sochi as a medal favorite in men’s moguls, but a bad first run jeopardized his chances at even reaching the finals. But Deneen put together a strong round in the second qualification round and will have a chance to compete for a medal later Monday night.

Deneen posted a score of 22.38, considerably better than his 10.36 on the first run, in which he lost balance as he approached the second jump and hit a flag.

His American teammate Bradley Wilson already qualified for the finals.

The finals begin shortly (10 p.m. in Sochi, 1 p.m. in Washington).
