American women close in on two bobsled medals

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia — Entering the final heat, the United States is in strong position to win two medals in the women’s bobsled Wednesday. The biggest question: Which two?


The top American sled, piloted by Elana Meyers, lost a bit of ground in the third heat Wednesday but still enters the final run with an edge over second-place Canada. Entering the day with a commanding 0.23-second lead at the event’s midpoint, Meyers, a former softball player at George Washington University, and Lauryn Williams posted a time of 57.69 in the third heat and have a total time of 2:52.58.


The Canada-1 sled was 0.12 seconds faster in the third heat and now trails the Americans by 0.11 seconds with one run to go.


The USA-2 sled, piloted by Jamie Greubel, is firmly in third place. It finished the third heat in 58 seconds for a total time of 2:53.45. It trails Canada by 0.76 seconds but leads the fourth-place German sled by 0.64.The third American sled, featuring driver Jazmine Fenlatoro and Lolo Jones, enters the final heat in 11th place with a total time of 2:55.23, after finishing the third heat in 58.50.
